Trade was much of what drove progress throughout the American West during the 1800s, and trade was used to support peace efforts during the Indian Wars and the gradual forcing of Native Americans onto reservations. Trade didn’t always resolve land disputes, but when it did, the federal government sought to preserve the locations where trading posts and crossroads prospered. Case in point, located in Ganado, AZ, Hubbell Trading Post (est. 1876) is the oldest continually operating trading post in the Southwest. It provided a crucial hub for trade and cultural exchange between Navajo tribespeople and European settlers. Today, visitors learn about trade and traditions, such as silversmithing and weaving. Available as a poster, framed print, notecard, postcard, metal sign, or canvas, this original national park art would look great on any wall. For a full list of national park sites in all 50 states, check out the official website for the National Park Service.
